Each month we profile an alumnus to let you know a little bit about where student's lives have taken them since they left the Big Toy.
Leigh Moffet
This month we spoke to Leigh Moffet. Leigh attended Tate's in the 1990s.
She is a graduate of West High School, and the University of Tennessee, where she earned a degree in Exercise Science. She is currently attending physical therapy school in St. Augustine, Florida. She will graduate with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy in December, 2009.
Recently, we asked her to tell us a little bit about her experience as a student at Tate's School, and what she has been up to since.
KT: What is your earliest memory of Tate's?
LM: I came in the middle of the school year in first grade. Math was my least favorite subject, but it became fun because we added and subtracted with little tubs of beans! I loved it! I also remember thinking I was fluent in Spanish because we began taking the language in first grade, which was great.
KT: Whom or what do you remember most?
LM: I remember all the teachers, I never had one I didn’t like. I also remember running around during recess playing “Girls Chase Boys” and vice versa. We also used to spin around on the tire swing a million times, and I used to do it even though I have motion sickness. I never wanted to admit that I felt really sick the rest of the day after doing that!
KT: Describe a favorite experience at Tate's?
LM: I won the spelling bee in 4th grade. That was one of the most honorable moments for me, and I still brag about it to this day.
KT: What is the best advise your teachers ever gave you?
LM: Mrs. Richardson told me motorcycles were dangerous because she was in an accident where she had her leg caught in the motor (if I remember correctly). Everytime I see people riding, I think about that scar on her leg, and how much she said it hurt! I’ve never been on a motorcycle, and likely never will.
KT: What would you be doing if you could do or be anything?
LM: Physical therapy! I love my job. If not that, I would like to do something with the environment. This earth is beautiful, I would love to be able to assist in keeping it that way.
KT: When do you do your best thinking?
LM: While I’m hiking. When you’re hiking alone, you’re never lonely. Either that or hula hooping. Yes, it’s still fun even when you’re 24.
KT: What is your favorite thing about what you do now?
LM: I love making a positive impact on people’s lives, and building relationships with people I wouldn’t ordinarily meet. You never know when one aspect of someone’s life is going to help shed new light on your own. I try to love my life and appreciate every day.
KT: Who inspires you?
LM: My parents. They’re full of flaws, and they’re perfect. I hope I’m just like them one day.
