  CINCO DE MAYO

On May 5, Tate's students enjoyed a Taco Buffet for their first schoolwide commemoration of the Mexican celebration known as Cinco de Mayo. In the month preceding the celebration students were involved in a cultural study of Mexico in their Spanish classes.  They explored basic geographical facts, discussed the rich blend of Native American and Spanish traditions and culture, and the uniqueness of Mexico among all of the other Spanish speaking countries.  The students also learned that the actual celebration of Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican victory festival observed by Mexican-American communities and primarily in Puebla, Mexico. Historically it is the anniversary date of the Mexican defeat of the French at the battle of Puebla.  It is now a day that celebrates patriotism, unity, and Mexican heritage. Two of our students, Gio Ferron and Sammy Ferron, who are of Mexican heritage, treated us all by wearing their typical costumes from Mexico. Señora Cindy would like to thank Nicole Underwood (mom of Nicholas, Abigail, and Buchanan) who helped coordinate the event and all of the parents who brought food, served food, and helped make the event so special for the students.
