Knoxville, TN - Tate’s School confirmed that they are moving forward with plans to construct an 8,500 square foot Athletic & Dining Hall facility on a newly dedicated area of their 52 acre campus. After a lengthy selection process, it was announced that Merit Construction has been selected as the general contractor. “We are enthusiastic to welcome Merit as our partner on this project due to their extensive experience and expertise in education-related construction,” said Lou L Tate, CEO & Founder of Tate’s.

With funding provided by BB&T, the new facility will include an indoor gym for P.E. and team sports, a venue for speakers and exhibitions, a dining area, and a kitchen where homemade, nutritionally-sound meals will be prepared daily. Tate’s campus is filled with classrooms that feature exposed log and wooden beams consistent with the warm, inviting, non-institutional style unique to Tate’s School. The new building will fit right in! Barry Byrd Architecture has designed the building to look nothing like a gym “With the look of an elegant Kentucky horse stable on the exterior and heavy timber beams and trusses on the interior, it will become a signature building in our community,” said Barry Byrd, Architect.

With winter approaching, Tate’s School hosted the official groundbreaking on November 11th and construction is set to begin November 16th. Founders Joe and Lou L Tate kicked off the festivities with Joe, an army veteran, starting the fun with his brass cornet echoing across campus. Lou L followed suit by driving a backhoe onto the site to the delight of students and parents. Not to be outdone, all of the construction partners sported sport golden shovels, dark sunglasses, and lots of attitude. “This was so much fun,” said Andrew Van Hook, a first grader at Tate’s.

“The new building will make a lasting impression on children for years to come,” said Buddy Heins, Vice President of Merit Construction. Scheduled for completion in the summer of 2016, the building will be utilized not only by Tate’s School, but by Tate’s Day Camp which hosts thousands of students each summer ranging in age from 3 – 15.

Recent growth at Tate’s school is a part of a five year managed growth strategy which includes expansion into the middle school grades. This fall Tate’s opened the new middle school campus for their first class of 6th Graders. Future construction plans include additional buildings to expand into the 7th and 8th grades in the next two years. “ BB &T is proud to partner with Tate’s School. We congratulate them on their expansion,” Michael Willett, Regional President with Branch Banking & Trust Company.
