Our 4th Grade poets recently stole the show at the Poetry Slam! Last week our Tate’s Five Star Fifth Grade students presented their final capstone presentations, “What’s the Big Deal, Tennessee?". The project consisted of four parts: research and writing about the turning points of Tennessee history, using technology to create collage banners to signify each turning point, oral presentations to practice public speaking, and a creative aspect of choice to depict one if the researched events. The arts were exhibited through a variety of ways including music, cooking, acrylic painting, model representations, and more. First Grade students recently celebrated their accomplishments in writing by participating in the Poetry Cafe Program and reading their poems and dedication pages to parents and audience members. Students wore berets in the style of 1960's poetry readings. After the program, students shared their portfolios with their families while enjoying delicious refreshments. Third Grade students recently brought history to life with their annual Wax Museum. Students chose a famous person from the past, researched and created a timeline of that person’s life, and wrote an expository paper. Students then created a display board, a costume, and acted as though they were that person! Each student was frozen in place, like a wax statue, until a button was pushed – then they presented the personal story of their selected famous person in character. Wonderful job, students! ... Fourth Grade students recently spent three days and two nights at Camp Wesley Woods exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There, students participated in a waterfall hike, learned survival skills, orienteering, archery, stream ecology, climbing, challenge course skills, hiked at night, sang campfire songs, and ate s'mores. At Tate’s Middle School, students spend one hour each week on Genius Hour—a special time to explore a passion project that benefits themselves or others. Inspired by Google’s Genius Hour, this initiative sparks creativity, innovation, and motivation. Students launched businesses, created video games, learned new languages, and even forged swords in our blacksmithing forge!
